How to Size Your Rug Like an Interior Architect
A common mistake in home decorating is treating a rug as an afterthought. In reality, the rug is the foundation; it defines the boundaries of a room. If the rug is too small, the room feels disjointed and cluttered. If it’s too large, it swallows the architecture.
The Living Room Anchor: To achieve that “Soar Rugs” luxury look, aim for a size that allows all furniture legs to rest on the rug. If your space is smaller, ensure at least the front two legs of your sofa and chairs are grounded on the pile. This creates a cohesive “conversation zone.”
The Dining Room Clearance: Don’t just measure your table; measure the chairs. A rug should extend at least 24–36 inches beyond the table edge so that when a guest pulls their chair out to sit, the back legs stay on the rug.
The Bedroom Sanctuary: For a King or Queen bed, an 8×10 or 9×12 rug placed perpendicular under the bed (stopping just before your nightstands) provides a soft landing for your feet every morning.
